Ivana Wey’s successful season

Five EVZ players took part in the A World Championship in the USA, three of them for the first time at this level. Forward Ivana Wey looks back.

The last few months have flown by for Ivana Wey. The highlights were so plentiful. In January, the EVZ forward took part in the U18 World Championship in the Bossard Arena at home. This was followed by the Cup Final, the SWHL B championship title and promotion to the PostFinance Women’s League with the Zug team. And finally, their first A-World Championship was on the programme.

In Utica in the state of New York, Wey and the Swiss women were unfortunate. They lost all their group matches and the quarter-final against the Finns 3:1. “It was similar to the U18 World Championships: we could have done better. We all believed we could have progressed, but unfortunately we lacked luck,” summarised Ivana Wey. The 18-year-old from Davos doesn’t want that to be taken as a complaint: “You have to expect that in sport.” Ivana Wey scored the only goal of the game. Launched by star striker Alina Müller, the Zug player showed what sets her apart: Thanks to her irrepressible drive towards goal, she got the better of two opponents and scored with a backhand shot. Ivana Wey’s name also appeared on the scoreboard in the Swiss team’s final match against Germany. After a rush, she set up her EVZ team-mate Lara Stalder, who scored to make it 2:1. Switzerland ultimately won 3:2 after extra time to secure their place in the A group.

For Ivana Wey, her first World Championships at this level was an instructive experience, she says: “Standing on the ice next to Alina Müller and Lara Stalder is an honour for me. When I see how they or Canada’s Marie-Philip Poulin play, I know where I want to be.” Zug’s contribution to the Swiss World Championship team was considerable. With five players, EVZ had the second-largest contingent. In addition to Ivana Wey and Lara Stalder, Noemi Ryhner and debutants Naemi Herzig and Annic Büchi were also involved. Head coach Colin Muller is also a club legend.

With promotion to the PostFinance Women’s League, a new challenge awaits the Zug team in the coming season. “Our goal there is also the championship title,” says Ivana Wey. Is she enjoying the peace and quiet after the exciting last few months? “I’m glad to have a few days to recharge my batteries. But I’m never happy about the end of the season.”
