Dolomites Cup: Victory over the German Champion

This weekend, the EVZ is taking part in the 20th edition of the Dolomites Cup in Neumarkt (South Tyrol, Italy).

Victory against Eisbären!

The EVZ also wins its second preseason game. In the Dolomite Cup semifinals, they secure a 2-0 victory over the German champions, Eisbären Berlin.

Goaltender Leonardo Genoni is named Man of the Match. In his first appearance since the World Championship final at the end of May with the Swiss national team, Genoni once again remained unbeatable after 60 minutes and over 20 saves. After a shaky start, Loris Wey opened the scoring by deflecting a Moverare rocket into the Eisbären’s net. The longer the game went on, the more Berlin pressed for the equalizer. But Zug had the game under control—and whenever things got dicey, Leo Genoni was there. In the final minutes, the Eisbären went on a six-on-five rush with the goalie pulled. After a masterful assist from Sven Leuenberger, Chris Egli, in his first game in an EVZ jersey, sealed the 2-0 final score with an empty-net goal.

With this win, the EVZ advances to the Dolomiten Cup final. There, they’ll face the Czech team HC Kometa Brno on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. You can follow the game here in our live ticker or via the paid livestream (see below).

The Dolomiten Cup has been held since 2006 and has since become one of the most long-standing international pre-season tournaments in European ice hockey. For EVZ, this year’s edition marks a return after an eight-year absence: the Zug-based team previously took part in Neumarkt in 2009, 2010, 2017 and 2018. EVZ went on to win the tournament on two occasions (in 2010 and 2017).
