Game Preview: EVZ vs HC Fribourg-Gottéron

EVZ WELCOMES FRIBOURG-GOTTÉRON, SECOND IN THE TABLE, TODAY (THURSDAY).

With seven rounds left to play in the 2023/24 qualifiers, the countdown to the season highlight, the playoffs, is on! EVZ can play in front of their own fans five more times in these seven rounds. Actually a plus point, if it weren’t for this negative series: 2:3 n.p. against Biel, 3:2 n.p. against Ambri, 1:2 against Ajoie, 2:3 n.V. against Lausanne, 4:5 against Davos – in the last five games at the BOSSARD Arena, Zug have not won a single game in regulation time and have only picked up four out of a possible fifteen points.

RELAXED POSITION DESPITE DEFEAT

Dan Tangnes’ team is under no pressure in the standings, even after Tuesday’s 6-3 defeat in Davos. Eight points behind Fribourg and twelve points behind leaders ZSC Lions, the train to the top has left the station. But third place is not in danger, the lead over fourth-placed Lausanne (8 points) and fifth-placed SC Bern (11) is too big. Lausanne, who can still welcome the EVZ to the Vaudoise Arena in the 52nd round, beat EHC Biel on Tuesday (5-2), but have only won one point more (7) than the EVZ (6) in the last five rounds. Only bottom-placed Ajoie (5 games/1 point) have picked up fewer points in this time.

HC FRIBOURG-GOTTÉRON: A CHALLENGE FOR THE EV TRAIN

But now comes HC Fribourg-Gottéron! The team that has shown amazing consistency on the ice this season, but has lost its last eight games in Zug. The team against which the EVZ also prevailed 4:3 in the last duel in the BCF Arena, which was packed with 9075 fans – thanks to a compact team performance and despite conceding the first goal after 31 seconds! While the team from Saanen responded impressively to the defeat against the Central Swiss team with a 2:1 home win against the leaders ZSC Lions and a smooth 4:0 away in Kloten, the latter remained winless against Biel, Rapperswil and Davos for the first time this season for three games in a row. The team of Christian Dubé, who was sent to the stands early in the last direct duel after a dispute with the referees, had a day off on Tuesday.

TOP SCORER DUEL: MARTSCHINI VS. SÖRENSEN

Lino Martschini still wears the golden helmet of EVZ’s top scorer. The best EVZ scorer of all time scored his 21st goal of the season in Davos. He is still five goals short of his personal record (26) from the 2015/16 regular season. Marcus Sörensen has eight more goals to his name than Lino Martschini. The Swedish forward from Fribourg-Gottéron is not only the league’s top scorer with 53 points, but also by far the most prolific scorer at the moment with 29 goals!
