The U20-Elite team is in the semifinals!

The U20 Elite team has advanced against the Fribourg-Gottéron Young Dragons and will play against the GCK Lions starting Sunday, March 16.

The oldest juniors of EVZ look back on a dramatic playoff quarterfinal series against the Fribourg-Gottéron Young Dragons. In all five games, the Zug team fell behind. In games 4 and 5, they were even down 0-2 – a loss would have meant elimination. However, the team showed great character and won 5-3 and 6-2, respectively. In the final game, the Zug team won the third period 4-0.

Head Coach Thomi Derungs is proud of his team: “It’s amazing how the guys performed under such difficult circumstances,” he says, adding with a smile, “However, it would be helpful if they were ready from the start and didn’t leave it to a dramatic finish.” In the semifinals, the qualification winner Zug will face the GCK Lions. The first game is already scheduled for Sunday (4:00 PM, OYM).

The Zurich team finished the regular season in 5th place. However, they present a different team in the playoffs, as several players from the Swiss-League team have joined them. They won their quarterfinal series against HC Lugano 3-1. “The favorite role clearly belongs to the GCK Lions,” says Thomi Derungs. Concentration lapses like those in the early phases of the quarterfinal series can’t happen again. But he believes his team can improve: “We weren’t at our limit in the quarterfinals. If we can play our best hockey, we are tough to beat for any opponent.”
