The 89th IIHF World Championship begins on 15 May in Zurich and Fribourg. It will be a special tournament for Switzerland, as this marks the first time since 2009 that the World Championship is being held on home soil. What’s more, following two silver medals in 2024 and 2025, national coach Jan Cadieux’s team can count on having a chance of winning a medal again this year.
The final World Championship squad will not be announced until just before the tournament begins. This is because the NHL season is still underway and the National League playoff final has yet to be played. Nevertheless, preparations for the World Championship are in full swing among the participating nations. Several EVZ players are also involved.
SWITZERLAND
No fewer than five Zug players are taking part in Switzerland’s first week of World Cup preparations. Leonardo Genoni, having been named MVP of the last World Cup, is naturally included in the initial World Cup squad. Four outfield players – Tobias Geisser, Gregory Hofmann, Sven Senteler and Fabrice Herzog – are also part of the squad. All five will play in the two friendly matches against Slovakia in Topolcany on Thursday and Friday.
This week, Switzerland continues its World Cup preparations with its second training camp in Biel. The national team will face the same opponent—this time Hungary—on both Thursday and Friday. The five Zug players mentioned above are once again included in coach Jan Cadieux’s roster.
CZECH REPUBLIC
Two Zug players are part of the Czech Republic’s preparation camp. Dominik Kubalík and Daniel Voženílek, who left EVZ at the end of the 2025/26 season, will face Germany twice on Thursday and Friday in Karlovy Vary. In the first game, the Czech Republic won 5–3, with Voženílek getting on the scoresheet.
SWITZERLAND U18
The U18 national team is aiming to regain promotion to the top group at the Division I World Championship in Poland, starting on Saturday 18 April. Jan Daron, a Zug native, is also part of the squad.
EVZ congratulates its selected players on their nomination and wishes them every success!
