Thursday’s Cup quarter-final match against Ambrì-Piotta Girls is a highlight for the entire EVZ. It is particularly special for one Zug player. Elena Gaberell is the only Ticino player in the team. She knows all the opposing players from her past in Lugano and Ambrì – what’s more, she even lives with one of them. Lucia Luraschi and she live in a shared flat in Rivera. «We don’t often talk about the cup game, but deal with it professionally», says Gaberell.
The 18-year-old forward was one of the last players to join the newly formed EVZ Women’s Team. After the team in Lugano disbanded, she was looking for a new challenge. Her start was difficult, however, as Gaberell was out for three months due to a concussion. After her return to the team before Christmas, she scored 9 points in 4 championship games. She also played in the Cup round of 16 match against Fribourg-Gottéron (6:0 win).
The 18-year-old forward from Ticino will face her former teammates with the EVZ Women’s Team on Thursday (8 p.m., BOSSARD Arena).

Elena Gaberell rates Ambrì as much stronger. Last weekend, the Ticino side beat Fribourg in the PostFinance Women’s League and are in third place with the same number of points as the second-placed ZSC Lions. EVZ and Ambrì have already met once before in pre-season. The Zug team won that game 3:1, but Gaberell does not want to draw any conclusions about the cup game. «Ambrì were missing a lot of players back then, you can’t compare the two. I’m expecting a tough game against a very good opponent on Thursday.» For the forward, one thing is clear: «We absolutely want to win in order to reach the final tournament in Lucerne.»
The cup game starts at 8 p.m. in the BOSSARD Arena, doors open at 7.15 p.m. Admission is free.
