Kometa Brno is no stranger to EVZ: the two teams have faced each other many times in the Champions Hockey League. In 2017/18, the Round of 16 home and away games ended 4-3 (in Brno) and 5-2 (in Zug) in favor of the Czechs, but a year later, EVZ won both group stage matches 3-2 and 2-1.
On Wednesday, October 15, EVZ welcomes HC Kometa Brno for the final and decisive regular season game.
«We’re in the Champions Hockey League for the third time and we’ve draw Zug yet again. In 2017, there were two wins, a year later two losses. Now it’s time to beat our Swiss competitors again.»
Kamil Pokorny, Head Coach Kometa Brno
The Comets won their first two home games of the current season against Brynäs and Odense, but have since suffered three consecutive defeats – most recently a 5-0 thrashing by undefeated leaders Ilves Tampere last Wednesday. This leaves Brno in 13th place, one point behind EVZ, after five of six regular season games.
The following applies to EVZ: Qualification for the playoffs is still possible on their own, but they need to score points against Kometa. Otherwise, Zug could slip below the line and would be dependent on help from other teams. Mathematically speaking, 15 teams are still fighting for the remaining eight playoff spots. If EVZ ends up tied on points with other teams, the following tiebreaker will decide:
– More wins after 60 minutes
– More total wins (after 60 minutes, overtime, or shootout)
– better goal difference
Since EVZ does not play until Wednesday, the results of Tuesday’s six games will give more insight into the starting position for head coach Michael Liniger’s team. However, the head coach is clear that the team needs to focus on its own game and is determined to secure a victory against Kometa.
«Kometa Brno are an experienced team with many leaders who have also achieved success on the international stage. They impress with disciplined and selfless defensive play, showing strong physical presence and toughness in battles. It will be a special game for our Czech and Slovak players.»
Michael Liniger, Head Coach EVZ
