Just like last year, the playoff quarterfinal against HC Davos proved to be the end of the road for EVZ. However, the manner of their defeat was different. With the exception of Game 3, Zug consistently matched the superior regular-season champions Davos, giving it their all. In hindsight, the losses in Games 1 and 2, games that EVZ could easily have won, ultimately proved fatal.
Game 5 in Davos started well for the Central Swiss team. They had the better scoring chances, and it was Sven Senteler who put EVZ ahead 1-0 on the power play. Zug took the lead into the first intermission, but also a two-minute penalty. And so, right at the start of the second period, HC Davos capitalized on the power play – top scorer Stransky tied the game. EVZ struggled in the second period, and in the 39th minute, Tino Kessler scored the game-winner after a solo effort. 2-1 for Davos. EVZ coach Benoît Groulx appealed the controversial goal, but the referees upheld their decision.
The final period of the season followed. Tambellini quickly made it 3-1 for Davos. Zug couldn’t mount a comeback. The season ended with a 1-4 defeat and another playoff quarterfinal berth. In the end, the burden of finishing 8th in the regular season and the hurdle of “qualifying champion Davos” proved tobe too high.
