The new year begins for the EVZ Women’s Team with a top-of-the-table clash. On Friday, the third-placed Zug team will face leaders SC Bern. And in a special setting: The 5th Winter Classic in Gstaad is on the program. In the open air, the Zug team will try to close the current eight-point gap in the PostFinance Women’s League table. The recent memory provides additional motivation, as Head Coach Daniela Diaz’s team also played their last championship game in 2024 against the Bernese side – and won 3:1. In the week before the end of the year, both teams played against a Canadian college team that was in Switzerland, the Lakeland Rustlers U23. The EVZ won 9:0, the Bernese 13:1.
The Zug team will take part in the Winter Classic for the first time on Friday (January 3, 5.30 p.m.) in Gstaad.
SCB and its predecessor club Bomo Thun have contested all of the Winter Classics. The first was won by HC Ladies Lugano, the second by HC Davos and the third and fourth by SC Bern. On Friday, both teams will have to do without several players who have been called up for the U18 World Championship in Vantaa (Finland). For EVZ, this applies to defenseman Lorena Wrann and forwards Naemi Herzig and Jael Manetsch. SC Bern defenders Mila Croll, Ilana Leibundgut and forward Céline Bonassi will not be taking part in Gstaad.
Two days later (Sunday, January 5, 2:30 p.m.), the first game of 2025 awaits at the BOSSARD Arena. Zug will host Neuchâtel Hockey Academy, who are in eleventh place in the table. The previous encounters went to EVZ with scores of 8:1, 5:0 and 8:2.
