It will soon be a year since the Zug women celebrated their first title at the highest national level. In the final of the National Cup, they turned around a 0:2 deficit against HC Fribourg-Gottéron Ladies to win 5:3, with Nina Harju scoring the game-winner. The EVZ are now on course to successfully defend their title. The ZSC Lions await in the semi-final of the Final 4 tournament in Lausanne on Friday (5 p.m., Vaudoise aréna). It is the first real touchstone in the current campaign. In the round of 16, the Zug team won 15:0 against the GCK Lions from SWHL B, and in the quarter-finals they beat PFWL bottom side Neuchâtel Hockey Academy 9:0.
The National Cup suits the EVZ: the team has won ten of its eleven games to date, with an overall goal difference of 101:15. The only defeat suffered by the then lower-ranked Zug team was a 2:1 penalty shoot-out loss to SC Bern in the 2024 final. The record holders of the Cup title are the ZSC Lions. They have won ten of the 17 editions to date. The current EVZ Head Coach Daniela Diaz has been behind the boards for half of them. The Zurich and Zug teams have already faced each other once in the Cup: In the round of 16 last season, Zug prevailed 5:4 after extra time. The last meeting in the championship was only a short time ago. Last Thursday, EVZ won 5:0 at home in the OYM hall.
In the second semi-final of the Cup final tournament in Lausanne, SC Langenthal Ladies will face HC Davos Ladies (20:15). The women from Graubünden are favourites, especially as the team from Bern will disband at the end of the season. However, the same situation already applied to HC Ambrì-Piotta in the quarter-finals – before the Ticino side lost to Langenthal.
