“We must not become overconfident”

The Zug women want to successfully defend the National Cup – concentration is key.

The women’s team is aiming for its fourth title in its almost three-year history at the end of the week. So far, the EVZ has won the SWHL B championship (2023/24), the EWHL Euro Cup and the National Cup (both 2024/25). The Final 4 for the Cup title is on the programme in Lausanne on Friday. Head coach Daniela Diaz’s team will face the ZSC Lions in the semi-final (5 p.m., Vaudoise aréna). The Zug team, who have won the last twelve competitive games in a row, are favourites. The players have now learnt to deal with this role. The key to this is the willingness to work hard right to the end despite the clear course of the game. This was seen most recently in the PostFinance Women’s League in the 9:0 victory of leaders Zug against second-placed HC Ambrì-Piotta.

Nevertheless, the Zug team does not lose its grounding. International striker Noemi Ryhner (25) says: “My experience and my temperament ensure that I don’t become overconfident and keep my feet on the ground.” Her team-mate Lia Egger (22) adds: “We can’t get overconfident, we have to focus entirely on the moment.” It would be the Freiämter’s first title ever. She joined the EVZ for the current season from the SWHL B on a training contract and also plays for partner club EHC Sursee in the second-highest league. Thanks to her willingness to keep learning and her enjoyment of the game, she has played for the majority of the PFWL team. The qualities that she has practised will also be in demand in the coming days if the trophy collection is to grow.
