With a clear defeat against tournament winner Ambrì-Piotta (1:5) and a narrow victory against Adler Mannheim (2:1), EVZ finished second at the 10th Lehner Cup in Sursee.
Like a week before at the Red Bull Salute, the Swiss champions missed the tournament victory with a weak performance in the first game. The Zugers had to go down against a strong and motivated Ambrì-Piotta especially in the middle third and conceded four goals in less than four minutes. Mistakes in the build-up to the game and a lack of defensive behavior favored the Ticino team, whose trio of Dario Bürgler and the new Czech acquisitions Filip Chlapik (from Sparta Prague) and Michael Spacek (from Frölunda Göteborg) were particularly convincing. Chlapik, last season's top scorer in the Czech Extraliga, was successful three times in the two games, Bürgler twice, Spacek once.
As in Kitzbühel, Zug showed a positive reaction to the false start in the second game. With a clear improvement in performance, especially in the defensive work, they held off the eight-time German champions Adler Mannheim 2-1 in front of almost 4,000 fans in the season opener at the BOSSARD Arena on Saturday. Goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni missed his first shutout of the season by just 16 seconds.
