Dan Tangnes “Coach of the Year”

The Fenix Outdoor & Warrior European Hockey Awards 2022 of the Alliance of European Hockey Clubs (E.H.C.) took place on 15 June. EVZ Head Coach Dan Tangnes was awarded “Coach of the Year”.

After Tangnes won the Swiss championship title in 2021 for the first time since 1998, the Norwegian coach led the EVZ to a second consecutive title in 2022, this time in a highly improbable manner. Trailing 3-0 in the final series against the ZSC Lions, Tangnes had his team play four perfect defensive games in which Zug allowed only three goals, becoming the first team in a major national league in 80 years (1942 Toronto Maple Leafs) to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a final series. The EVZ also won the regular season after another 100-point season.

The other nominees were: Cam Abbott (Rögle BK, SWE), Serge Aubin (Eisbären Berlin, GER), Jussi Tapola (Tappara Tampere, FIN), Václav Varaďa (Oceláři Třinec, CZE).

About the Alliance of European Hockey Clubs: The Alliance was formally established on 13 June 2016 at the E.H.C.’s first Annual General Meeting in Berlin by around 70 clubs from 13 European countries. Ice hockey is thus the third major European team sport, after the European Club Association (ECA) in football and Forum Club Handball (FCH), to establish a club alliance to safeguard and promote the interests of professional ice hockey clubs and represent them internationally. The E.H.C. currently has 87 member clubs from 16 European countries.
