Leon Muggli drafted as number 52

On Saturday, Leon Muggli was drafted 52nd overall in the NHL Draft by the Washington Capitals.

This is the fulfillment of “a big childhood dream” for the 17-year-old. Muggli will attend the Washington Capitals’ development camp until Saturday, July 6 and then return to Switzerland. The young defenseman from Cham will continue to complete The Hockey Academy training program until 2026 and is therefore likely to play at least one more season in an EVZ uniform.

“It was incredible when I heard my name called,” said Muggli after her was called up by the 2018 Stanley Cup winner in the 2nd round. “I’m super happy that I got to experience this moment with my family.” The Capitals’ pick came as a bit of a surprise, as Muggli and his agent had expected to be drafted by Utah, Seattle or Detroit. “But I really like Washington and I’m over the moon!” Team colleague Tobias Geisser, to whom the organization from the capital of the USA secured the rights in 120th place in 2017, has also already congratulated him.

KIRSCH ALSO DRAFTED

In addition to Leon Muggli, EVZ can look forward to another draft pick from its own ranks: The San Jose Sharks drafted goalie Christian Kirsch 116th overall in the 4th round. The Basel native joined EVZ in 2020 and started The Hockey Academy training program in 2021. Next season, he will be in goal for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL.

Forward Robin Antenen was not considered in the draft. The 18-year-old will continue to play for EVZ’s U20-Elit team next season and, after his first appearances with the 1st team last season, can expect to gain experience in the National League in 2024/25.
